Povijest brodogradnje otoka Lošinja
History of shipbuilding on the island of Lošinj

The beginnings of shipbuilding in Lošinj are connected with the history of antiquity, when the town of Osor became an important naval centre on the North Adriatic. Essential data and unreliable sources cannot be cited without new and additional research. Consequently, this communication will refer to a rapid and phenomenal development of Lošinj in connection with shipbuilding in the 19th and 20th centuries, and after the collapse of Venice in 1797, when the turbulent political period for the islands of Lošinj began, the replacement of the Great Fleet of the Republic was practically eliminated.
In fact, the Congress of Vienna of 1815, which fell under Austrian rule, once again offered the islanders relatively free shipping time and thus a progressive development of shipbuilding.
After the first large ship was built in 1824, Mali Lošinj became one of the shipbuilding centres on the North Adriatic, with Trieste and Rijeka.
As a result of this unexpected and unique development, we have been able to obtain interesting information about the entrepreneurial spirit and diligence of Lošinj, which has so far been demonstrated and maintained in the field of shipbuilding.

The dialect from Lošinj is part of the Venetian dialect, which originated from the long rule of the Republic of Venice over the territory of Istria and Kvarner.
This dialect, as the Lošinjers say, is spoken only by those who have lived on the island for generations and will unfortunately die out with them. The new generations speak the Lošinj dialect only in the family of origin. Sometimes they use it to communicate with their grandparents, who represent the last generation still connected with the past and who try to preserve their cultural identity through language. The cuisine of the old Lošinjers, together with other traditions, has proudly preserved its individuality and unconsciously conveys the language, customs and traditions of the past.
How long have you not breathed the strong, mossy scent of a forest, the intense smell of myrtle and juniper?
How long ago was it that a breath of sea air did not make you close your eyes to pleasure while the crystalline essence of algae and salt spreads in your heart?
And how many days have passed since you last stopped to observe the arc that the sun describes in the sky, its reflections in the water, to perceive a silence that speaks more than a thousand words to the soul.
The green island of Mali Lošinj is waiting for you who love nature.

L' isola marinara
The sea island
by Giovanni Gerolami
Publisher: Del Bianco Publisher; IED edition (1951)
Language: Italian
ASIN: B07JK54GGR
It is probable that there is no Lussignano, or lover of the history of Lussino, who has not read and reread the valuable work of Giovanni Gerolamil "L'isola marinara", published in 1951, which tells the story, the splendor and decline of the island until the outbreak of the Great War, with very brief references to the period immediately after the war. What perhaps not everyone has taken into account with the right consideration, is a small reference of the author to the dark years of the Second World War, after September 8, 1943. This reference can be read on the first page, in the note to the reader. Giovanni Gerolami says that he began writing his book at the beginning of the Second World War, and that he completed it when the Lošinj people began to feel in their flesh and spirit the effects of air and naval offenses, and, left to themselves, hungry and desperate they realized what fate had voted for them.
The author affirms that, at that point, he would have had two possibilities: to rework the text in the light of the dramatic events of those days, or to publish it as it stood. He decided for this last possibility, because, by adopting the first, he feared the danger of falling into the pathetic.

Natura in Cucina
Nature in the kitchen
by Adrijano Nikolić
(Reference data of the book follow)
The author: "If you go for a walk or a hike on the numerous paths of the mountain of Osor (Osorščica) along the "masiere" (Gromače), if you go through the olive groves and the dense forest of Cigale (Čikat), or if you finally, wrapped in the scent of the Mediterranean macchia, go to the sea or to the nearby islands, stop from time to time and admire the beauty of nature.
The need to relax, to enjoy nature, to experience the beauty of flowers and plants that we collect for health reasons, but which we also want to protect, is the real aim for the return to nature to which we also belong".
